What is Infrared?
Applications by Industry
Aircraft Hangers
The principal use of gas-fired infrared heaters is to efficiently heat commercial and industrial buildings or to spot heat the people within them. Heating an overall area with gas infrared heaters is particularly suited for buildings with large air volumes or high rates of air movement, where convection (air heating) methods are grossly ineffective.
In buildings such as aircraft hangars, the difficulties in convection heating become readily apparent. By contrast, a well-designed system using gas fired infrared heaters creates a high degree of fuel utilization efficiency since it heats objects and people directly. Heating the total mass of air volume in the space is not necessary.
Equipment Selection: High BTU tube heaters and/or high intensity infrared models are preferred for high-mount locations like aircraft hangars. Two-stage infrared heaters are highly recommended. They recover heat lost through large doors, yet they cycle less frequently during normal operation.
Hangar Door Installation: Most of the heat should be concentrated near the main door by locating burner boxes or additional heaters at this point. It is important to note that ANSI/NFPA 409 calls for the heater to be installed at least 10 feet above the highest wing surface of any aircraft stored inside.
Automotive
Most auto service garages and vehicle maintenance facilities have a large percentage of open door area in relationship to overall square footage. Cold vehicles being brought into the space make infrared heaters ideal for heating this space economically.
Overhead doors and vehicle lifts must be taken into consideration in the placement of heaters as doors or vehicles raised on the lifts may be damaged by infrared heaters placed in close proximity. The presence of vehicle lifts sometimes forces the placement of heaters down center aisles with reflectors angled toward the bay area. Also, care must be taken to maintain clearances from hose reels, exhaust collection systems, etc.
Since most auto service garages employ the use of degreasers, parts washers, rust-proofing, etc., the use of low intensity infrared tube heaters with outside combustion air supplied to each heater is recommended. Chemical contaminants need to be ventilated from the space mechanically even if tube heaters with outside air are utilized. Such fumes striking the surface of the hot radiant tube or being heated at floor levels can cause a chemical reaction resulting in offensive odors being present in the space. Most chemical fumes of this type are heavier than air and ventilation of the lower level of the building is recommended.
Equipment Selection: Depending on mounting height requirements, a full range of infrared heater models is available for application into auto service centers. Typically, tubes (75,000-150,000 BTU/h) are most commonly applied, but also popular are high intensity DR Series Heaters (30,000-90,000 BTUs).
The use of a vacuum system is usually prohibitive due to size and cost constraints. Two-stage models, such as the HL3 Series, provide faster heat recoveries as doors are opened and closed. Heaters are thermostatically controlled and very often interlocked with ventilation when unvented high intensity DR Series heaters are installed.
Installation: Apply heaters on a perimeter mounted design when applicable. Stack the door areas with extra units, or locate tube burner boxes there to provide extra heat. Take care to avoid violating the published clearances to combustibles with doors in the open position and/or lifts (with cars on them) in the up position. Common applications also utilize tubes located between lift rows (center of the building) or along side walls with reflectors positioned inward. Outside combustion air is highly recommended. Lastly, do not place any heater inside of a paint booth.
Car Washes
Car wash applications offer a variety of challenges. Most are designed for heat with the idea of freeze protection and spot heating of employees. Short length tube heaters with high BTU ratings or small to mid-sized high intensity heaters are good choices and are best placed at the ends of the tunnel for spot heating. Millivolt controls are typically chosen for equipment rooms (if shielded from the wind) for freeze protection during power outages
Stainless steel, silicone sealant, waterproof controls and electrical attachments are recommended. Lastly, heaters with two-stage operation will increase energy savings.
Detroit Radiant Products is pleased to offer a full line of low intensity infrared heaters specifically designed for harsh environments.
CNG Facilities
Natural gas is an affordable, abundant and environmentally acceptable option to power America. Infrastructure to support the increasing use of this fuel is being built today. The expansion of CNG (compressed natural gas) vehicle maintenance facilities is changing how municipalities or corporations run their fleet vehicles. Such facilities have to abide to special requirements as set forth in the NFPA 30A, whereby the heaters operating temperatures shall not exceed 750 F.
Detroit Radiant has the expertise to effectively heat these facilities. Our select CSA Design Certified heaters meet construction criteria necessary to meet code, but capable of properly heating your space. When heating these facilities, sometimes the challenge can be to fit the necessary quantity of burners to meet the heat load of the space. In these cases, we can utilize our engineered HLV vacuum systems for the design. Ultimately, we have many options and solutions for these types of facilities and we can generally turn around concept AutoCAD drawings within a few days.

Outdoor Heating
Whether you are looking to extend your outdoor season, have a designated smoking area, or make additional room for peak crowds, Detroit Radiant Products Companys broad offering can offer a solution that will fit your outdoor heating needs.
Guide to Selecting the Right Outdoor Heater Application Considerations:
- Excessive Air Movement: Wind or light breezes are perhaps the largest variable when trying to achieve comfortable heating in an outdoor or spot heating environment. The use of barricades such as wind curtains are highly recommended whenever possible.
- Mounting Heights: Traditionally, outdoor or spot heating requires the heating equipment to be mounted lower or closer to the people. Lowering the equipment may result in less coverage but will offer a more focused heat pattern to the desired area. The final mounting height of the heater may have to be adjusted to achieve the results desired by the customer.
- Customer Expectations: Depending on the needs of the customer, more or less heaters may be required for a given application. There is rarely a one size fits all solution to properly size an outdoor or spot heating application. Some customers may seek maximum comfort in extreme conditions while others may be looking to take the chill off for short exposure periods such as a designated smoking area.
Spot Heating
Spot heating should be utilized when only a portion of a building is to be heated. Both high intensity infrared heaters and low intensity infrared tube heaters can be used in spot heating applications.
Low intensity tube heaters are typically placed in a U-shaped configuration for spot heating. By design, a U-tube will place the hottest tube directly adjacent to the coldest tube for optimal comfort levels and allows for maximum flexibility in the placement of the heaters.
High intensity heaters are usually easier to install and less costly for spot heating applications. Buildings that are poorly insulated, loosely constructed, have high ceiling heights and/or high heat loss per square foot, are more conducive to high intensity heaters.
Warehouses
Equipment Selection: A wide variety of equipment options are available for heating a warehouse environment. The type of warehouse, size, mounting heights and other obstacles must be considered. Tube type heaters offer more options for heater placement with regard to clearances to combustibles. Heaters are normally thermostatically controlled.
Installation: Heaters are strategically placed within a warehouse for optimum coverage of space. This may be a perimeter-mounted system, or a series of heaters between rows of storage racks. Clearance to combustibles must be considered carefully. This is true for both top clearances and lower clearances, which are of concern when stacking combustible items. It is recommended that warning plaques (#PLQ) be mounted to advise users of clearance to combustibles and stacking limits.

HLV Series
Two-Stage, Multiple Burner Heating System
The HLV Series infrared vacuum heating system is engineered specifically for the design parameters of the building it is required to heat. More commonly found in larger commercial and industrial applications, these systems offer potential operating benefits that are not easily obtainable with traditional infrared tube heaters.
An engineered vacuum system emits low intensity infrared heat just like any other type of tubular heater. What makes these systems unique is the method in which they operate as well as their expanded operational boundaries. The operational objective of a vacuum system is to simply move hot gases from the burner(s) to the pump. This movement heats the emitter pipes, which in turn heat the building via infrared energy.
The HLV Series is engineered to utilize both two-stage and condensing technology, offering optimal operating efficiencies and fuel savings.
